Debbie's Story

Debbie Brutlag was born and raised in the Midwest. The youngest of five pastor’s kids, she grew up “in the church” (sometimes quite literally) and learned all the ins and outs of potlucks, Sunday School lessons, and cemetery lawn care. In recent years, she has learned much more about the real church, which turns out to have very little to do with any of that. She is a grateful member of that body of sinner-saints for whom Christ died and rose, who daily stake their lives on the rumor of grace.

Debbie’s life has been a varied series of seemingly unrelated experiences that somehow always manage to prepare her for what comes next. She graduated from Concordia University, Nebraska in 2007 with a degree in Studio Art. She has worked in retail management, graphic design, event planning, and home renovation.

Through all of this, she has discovered that often the best way to figure out if you can do something is to try. Moreover, she has learned again and again that her worth does not depend on her success or failure—it is in Christ alone. Thank goodness.

Romans 5:8

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Debbie has had an interest in overseas mission work since college, but is now enjoying her first opportunity to participate. She is excited to serve at “Stronghold Cambodia”, a Christian organization in Kampot, where she will teach English, share the Gospel, and help in any way she can. Please pray for her—that God is glorified through her, that He uses this experience to shape her, and that she adjusts well in her first trip more than ten miles past the U.S. border!
