Ethiopia

The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus is the largest Lutheran church body in the world. Their seminary in Addis Ababa trains pastors and church workers from many language backgrounds including students from other African countries. The academic language used in education in Ethiopia is English; however, many students lack the English skills necessary to complete the academic work. Faculty and administration are looking for ways to address this challenge, both the level of work students are producing in English and the limits which low English ability will place on graduates’ ability to have a national or international impact in their respective areas of Christian ministry.

Mission partners have the opportunity to teach academic English classes, manage an intensive English program, and hold English Bible studies and other faith growth events. Helping seminary students strengthen their English skills will not only allow them to learn from global theologians and study together at the seminary in spite of their varied native languages. It will also in turn allow them to contribute to worldwide theological conversations, African Bible translation work, and many other types of global ministry!
