South Sudan

As it is one of the world’s poorest countries, the physical needs in South Sudan are great. Alongside material poverty, the Church in South Sudan faces the strength of traditional religions and the prevalence of syncretism (folk religion blended into Christianity) requiring ongoing discipleship and strong teaching on the foundational truths of the Gospel.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of South Sudan/Sudan (ELCSS/S) based in Yambio operates over 20 schools driven by a commitment to the Gospel and focused on the mission of bringing hope and healing to students and families. Mission partners have the opportunity to support school staff and students through English teaching, training, and administrative support. Helping these schools become more Christ-focused and improving the quality of education will equip young people to not only know their Savior but also go forward in His mission in their own communities.

Another ministry is St. Luke Medical Clinic, a local initiative of the ELCSS/S. There is a need for a full time medical worker to help in the clinic and train other medical personnel. Mission partners with a medical background have the opportunity to provide general health education and training for local staff, improving the overall health of the community while they also integrate their faith life in all that they do.
