Serving Opportunity

Taiwan has strong ties to traditional religion and a temple on every street. At the same time, many young people in Taiwan are turning toward a secular, atheist view of the world. Taiwan has very few Christians and many Christians are the only believer in their family. The southwest part of the island where our mission partners serve is the least evangelized part of Taiwan.

Concordia Middle School was founded in 1967 by LCMS missionaries. It is a private Chinese Christian school including grades 7-12. This ministry of the China Evangelical Lutheran Church employs foreign teachers to instruct thematic English classes and Bible (in English) to over 2000 students, most of whom are not Christian.

Concordia English Language Academy (CELA) was started in 2000 by LCMS missionaries. CELA has elementary grade levels from first grade to sixth grade as well as a Kindergarten (ages 3-5). Foreign teachers instruct Bible, phonics, reading, writing, and conversational English two or three times a week.

In addition to teaching, mission partners reach out with the Gospel through campus fellowship activities, ministry with the local partner Lutheran church, and other community connections.

“Concordia Middle School serves over 2000 students from 3-years-old through 12th grade, most of whom come from non-Christian backgrounds. For many, this is one of the only opportunities they have to hear the Good News of the Gospel. These students hear God’s Word in their classes, chapel services, and in their daily interactions with Christian teachers.”
