Thom and Mary Garetson share 86 years of teaching experience between them, in Lutheran, public and international schools. Currently based in Hong Kong, Thom and Mary are poised to take the baton from Bob and Ellen Malzahn and begin volunteering at St. Peter’s Christian College in the township of Mhluzi, South Africa.
The Garetson’s were hoping to work with MCN’s Director of Education, Pat Klekamp, in schools around the world, but never expected to become involved so soon. Later this year they will be working with the faculty of St. Peter’s on staff development, as well as working with the school’s Vicar to help create a scope and sequence for St. Peter’s religion curriculum. The Garetson’s are excited to share their faith with their new colleagues, but also help the faculty of St. Peter’s discover ways to bring a Christian ethos into every classroom.
Thom and Mary have already made one trip to South Africa to gain an understanding of the work the Malzahn’s have started. They also met with the administrative team of St. Peter’s as well as Bishop Mandla Khumalo to hear their vision for St. Peter’s. Mission of Christ Network is an important partner with both St. Peter’s school and church and the Garetson’s feel blessed to now be a part of that partnership.
Any funds raised that exceed Mission Partner’s agreed upon stipend amount will become the property of MCN. In the alternative, excess funds may be used to support Mission Partner in missional activities under a new MOU, or Mission Partner may assign, after consultation with the Executive Director, any excess funds to one or more Mission Partners who are in good standing with MCN. The purpose for this is that any funds raised are to support missional activities throughout the world, and not for the financial benefit of MCN.
