“God’s not finished with you yet!” — Diane, Mission Partner Specialist in Cambodia
Many people work all their lives longing for the rest and relaxation of retirement – only to get there and realize they now long for not just rest but new purpose and fulfillment.
This was Tim and Diane’s experience. When Tim was unexpectedly laid off from his job at age 60, they decided that just as they had tithed their income during their working lives, now they would tithe their retirement to serve in Cambodia. Working with Stronghold Cambodia, they found ways to use their many gifts and experiences – nursing, construction, handy-man work, music – and they fell in love with the children that they get to teach, build relationships with, and tell about Jesus.
You have a wealth of experience and wisdom from years of walking with Jesus.
You may have the financial stability that young people often lack. Retirement income can be drawn on just as easily overseas – and often goes much further!
Many non-western countries place a high value on age and have great respect for and desire to learn from older adults.
What could I do?
Share the Gospel with those who’ve never heard the good news. Tell stories of God’s work in your life.
Serve alongside and learn from local Christian leaders as they reach out in their own communities.
Disciple new Christians, sharing with them from your life what it looks like to be a Christian spouse, parent, neighbor, or employee.
Serve as an ESL language partner, or mentor and teach alongside younger teachers.
Build Gospel-centered relationships as an “aunt,” “uncle,” or “grandparent” (terms of respect in many cultures) in a community where few people know Jesus.
