Taiwan Is #4

September 8, 2026 | Story, Taiwan, God's Glory

In a recent newsletter, Dr. Steve Oliver (seminary professor and missionary in Taiwan) wrote, “Taiwan’s Stock Market rose to the 4th in value worldwide (after the U.S., China, and Japan). This is amazing considering that Taiwan takes up only 0.02% of the world’s land space and also considering that Chinese were among the poorest 150 years ago (when England, the U.S., Germany, France & the Netherlands were richest)!

“Why? High Tech, especially semiconductors. Taiwan is the stone the builders rejected (U.N. and most countries) that became the chief cornerstone of High Tech since everyone now depends on Taiwan for the most advanced semiconductors that are the heart of most high-tech stuff.

“I pray that Taiwanese believers will use this power, wealth, and influence to glorify God and bless people, and to spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth (Matthew 28:19-20)!

“I took the photo above of my students [at China Lutheran Seminary] singing in the choir during our morning chapel and realized that they are all high-tech Taiwanese engineers (two are PhDs), now turning that power into theological studies and ministry. Perhaps because these very smart men found a lack of fulfillment in the high competition materials world, they are now giving their lives to serve full-time in church for the Lord.

What a privilege and also responsibility as I help them transition from science and technology to theology, mission, and shepherding!”
