Zach's Story

Zach was born in Oak Park, Illinois but has lived most of his life in Dubuque, Iowa with his parents, Jon and Ruth, and older sisters, Megan and Emily. The Barz household has always been a tight-knit, Christ-centered family environment that God has used to grow and strengthen Zach’s faith. His oldest sister Emily is a missionary in Asia who also partners with MCN, and his sister Megan recently accepted a position with Lutheran Development Group in St. Louis, MO.

As Zach grew up learning about Jesus at home and church, God presented him with various opportunities to serve and grow in cross-cultural settings. During his years at Concordia University Nebraska, Zach learned an incredible amount about culture and mission through his studies and through three different trips to Guatemala. Other formative experiences for him include a summer spent as a camp counselor at Camp Perkins, Idaho and a summer internship facilitating short-term mission trips in Webster Springs, West Virginia.

Zach graduated from Concordia Nebraska in May of 2018 with degrees in world and intercultural studies and mathematics, having also studied computer science and Spanish. This fall, he will move to Costa Rica to serve with Seeds of Hope, an organization that works to combat sex trafficking, drug use, and gang violence among youth by providing opportunities to hear the Gospel and develop useful vocational skills. Zach will work at a Seeds of Hope clubhouse in a high-risk community – teaching classes, mentoring teenagers, and ministering to families.

In his free time, Zach enjoys playing soccer, reading, hiking, learning, and traveling.

Pray for Zach this year as he adjusts to a new language, a new culture, and new ministry opportunities. Pray for relationships to be built, the Gospel to be shared, and God to be glorified!
